Aaron
Westman is equally at home on modern and period violins and violas, the viola d'amore, and the medieval fiddle.
He performs, records, and tours regularly throughout the world in classical, period instrument, jazz, rock, and world music
ensembles. Aaron is an avid and active teacher, having taught students ranging in age from 4 to 65, and at every
level from complete beginner to experienced professional.
Aaron's teaching emphasizes relaxed technique, style,
musicianship, and chamber music. He forms the foundation of a good technique with healthy posture and simple movements,
and incorporates yoga, improvisation, singing, patience, and good humor into lessons.
Aaron is a Visiting Artist in
Baroque Performance at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he teaches baroque violin and viola and co-directs
the period instrument ensembles. He has also been on the faculty of Sonoma State University's YACHE program and the Cazadero
Performing Arts Camp, coached string sections of the Santa Rosa Symphony and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Youth Orchestras,
and judged performance competitions for the Music Teachers Association of California.
As a performer, Aaron
is a member of Los Angeles based Musica Angelica (with whom he will tour the world in March and April of 2007) and San
Francisco based American Bach Soloists and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. He has also performed with the Santa Rosa
Symphony, Jubilate Orchestra, Bach Collegium San Diego, at Whistler Centre's Music in the Mountains Festival (British
Columbia), Fuglsang Castle (Denmark), ABS Summerfest, four seasons at the Bloomington Early Music Festival, and recorded
for Magnatune.com , National Public Radio's "Performance Today," and Hollywood.
He has premiered solo works by composers Neely Bruce, Jeffrey Loewe, Alvin Lucier, and Benjamin Taylor.
Aaron
holds a Master of Music degree from the Indiana University School of Music, where he double-majored in Viola Performance and
Early Music. He earned his B.A. with Honors in Music from Wesleyan University, and did additional studies at the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music where he was the only student of Geraldine Walther.
