Lisa Smolen is a 1992 graduate of
the Eastman School of Music College Preparatory Program, where she studied oboe with Jonathan Parkes & Richard Killmer.
She holds a Bachelor of Music in Oboe Performance from Ithaca College where she studied with Mark Hill. She has also
studied privately with John Snow. She has had the honor of working with renowned oboists Thomas Stacy, Ronald Roseman
and Henry Shuman. She has played under the batons of conductors Larry Racliffe, Craig Kirchoff, Malcolm W. Rowell and
Rodney Winther.
She is a member of AFM Local 369 (Las Vegas) and AFM Local 47 (Los Angeles).
A new resident
of Los Angeles in 2010, Lisa performs with the Los Angeles Pierce Symphonic Winds, and can be found performing around town
as a freelance oboist & woodwind doubler, and sells oboe and English horn reeds to other professional oboists . In 2006
Lisa began performing with "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular" shortly after it debuted that same summer.
Lisa lived in Las Vegas until 2009 where she performed with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society,
The Nevada Chamber Symphony and enjoyed providing music for the many weddings that can only happen in Vegas! Lisa has enjoyed a colorful performing career encompassing a wide spectrum of musical genres: classical, symphonic, wind
band, musical theater, opera and chamber ensembles of varying instrumentation and most recently recording woodwind tracks
for music for various media outlets including websites and video games. Lisa performs & records on all woodwinds
(oboe, English horn, flute, piccolo, alto saxophone, clarinet) and keyless bamboo flute and Irish pennywhistle.
For
9 years, she was the English horn soloist with both the Berkshire Symphony and the Massachusetts Wind Orchestra, and 4 years
as flutist with the Oblong Quintet in Williamstown, MA. She has performed, on oboe, with the Rochester and Albany Symphonies
(in New York). During her two seasons as 2nd oboist with the Binghamton Philharmonic, she was honored to perform at
the Glimmerglass and Bellayre Music Festivals. For 5 seasons she was principal oboist with the Sage City Symphony based
in Bennington, VT. She was also a member of the accompanying orchestras to several choral ensembles in Vermont, Massachusetts
& New York, most notably the Bennington Choral Society, The Berkshire Concert Choir and the Hudson Valley Concert Choir.
Focused study on Early Music at Ithaca College led to performances with several chamber ensembles as both flutist & oboist
including the Tamarack Strings, The Bennington Trio and The Oblong Quintet.
**Lisa performs on: Loree oboe and
English horn.
**She uses Yamaha brand flutes, piccolos, clarinet & alto sax.**
Throughout her career,
Lisa has enjoyed arranging & orchestrating for various woodwind ensembles including: woodwind quintet, flute choir, clarinet
choir, saxophone quartets & trios, and combined flute/clarinet choirs. For 9 years, she was the Visiting Instructor of
Woodwinds at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (North Adams, MA), and at the same time was the director of her own
private studio.
Lisahas been teaching private lessons since 1993, and firmly believes that it is the responsibility
of every musician to pass their craft along to the next generation.
